Thousands of Party-Goers Pack the House to Experience Innovative DJ Battle

Last night, lines wrapped around Rich’s nightclub as eager Houston partiers gathered to experience eight of Houston’s premier DJs rocking the party in the unique DJ battle format known as Red Bull Thre3style. When the show started, nearly 2,000 fans—with more pushing through the doors—crowded the dance floor to enjoy this one-of-a-kind battle. Each DJ took to the tables to find out who could really tear the house down. The competition was fierce but, in the end, local Houston legend, DJ Baby Jae won the crown just edging out DJ Kyle Berg and DJ Ebonix.

I’ve competed in several DJ battles and this show was different than anything I’ve ever been a part of,” said winner DJ Baby Jae. “Red Bull created something totally new that really celebrates who can rock the party.”

Competing DJ’s, DJ Johnny J, DJ Ebonix, DJ Baby Jae, DJ Kyle Berg, DJ Bizz, DJ GT, DJ Eddie Spettro, DJ Flash Gordon Parks, put together impressive sets featuring tunes ranging from the Jay-Z to Frank Sinatra. Five judges including DJ Enferno (Madonna’s tour DJ), DJ Riddler, DJ Oz De Funk, Paul Couture and Mickaël had the daunting task of selecting the champion.

Finally, on the slim chance that wasn’t enough for the fans, DJ Enferno and DJ Riddler concluded the show by each playing one-hour sets that left the crowd dancing and screaming for more…even at 3 in the morning!

I came here not quite knowing what to expect and it blew me away,” said crowd member Chris Kajander. “Exactly the type of party Houston needs.

Red Bull Thre3Style is an innovative concept that gives highly skilled DJs a platform to battle, perform, gain notoriety and express themselves in a party atmosphere. Eight DJs fight for the crowd’s favor, each with a 15 minute set that MUST contain at least three different musical genres.

Red Bull Thre3style is an international event series and will feature 14 events across the United States, culminating in the U.S. National Finals in Denver on October 7. In addition to Houston, other cities participating include: Dallas, Charlotte, Los Angeles, Denver, Nashville, Denver, Birmingham, Orlando, Phoenix, Miami, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, St. Louis and Cincinnati. The winner from the U.S. National Finals will advance to compete in the Global Finals in Paris, France, where they will compete against the winners from twelve countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Ecuador, France, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Congrats & much respect to the Kracker Nuttz very own DJ Baby Jae for winning the Red Bull Thre3Style Battle last night @ Rich’s Nightclub (2401 San Jacinto.) Placing #1 over 7 other DJ’s… each contestant had to showcase their skills & ability to rock a crowd, keep them moving, and mix 3 different genres of music in 15 minutes.

HERE’S THE CATCH… none of the DJ’s competing were allowed to play the same songs as the DJ or DJ’s ahead of them played! (OUCH!!! Separating the men from the boys) From Rock, Old School, House to Funky Soul… it was a great night to hear some good music.

Here’s how they placed:
DJ Baby Jae (Kracker Nuttz / 97.9 The Box)
Kyle Berg
DJ Ebonix (BoothPimps / 97.9 The Box)

Congrats to the Top 3… and mad RESPECT to all the DJ’s competing

DJ Baby Jae now moves on to the “US Finals” in October to be held in Denver, Colorado (ROAD TRIP!!!) The winner of the “US Finals” moves on to the “WORLD FINALS” to be held in Paris, France! The entire Kracker Nuttz family is proud of their own & hope that everyone will support Baby Jae in his journey towards the finals. Five-dollar pitchers are always a great way to get me out to a bar, even on the Lord’s Day. Apparently the deal’s a pull for plenty of others, too, because 702 (702 W. Dallas) is bustling with Houstonians this lazy Sunday evening. Our temperamental Houston weather is uncharacteristically mild, and many partyers are lounging outdoors on 702’s enclosed patio. Yes, it is a perfect day for a little libation.

DJ Baby Jae says the Kracker Nuttz are much more than a Box brand.

I peer down at the end of the bar. A dude is dancing about in an epileptic frenzy with imaginary glowsticks. I flash back to the last Sunday I came out to 702 and tell myself I should probably ease up on the brew tonight.

But there’s some other activity going on behind the spaz with the glowsticks. I notice that people are now being charged at the door and that DJs are setting up tables outside on 702’s second enclosed patio. But something’s wrong. The Kracker Nuttz of 97.9 The Box usually hold down the tables on Sundays, and glowstick guy ain’t seizuring to no Kracker Nuttz. A barmaid hands me a flyer for tonight’s show, an electro house battle pitting Starkiller against DJ Austin Leeds. “Goddamnit“, I tell myself, “I left my glowsticks at home.”

Jokes aside, beer and the Kracker Nuttz are on some Voltron shit in keeping the lazy Sunday party vibe at 702. At my last Sunday visit, the ‘Nuttz, spinning everything from hip-hop to hair metal, caused a great deal of beer-sloshing and impromptu karaoke sessions for a good portion of the bar. By sunset, their set made it easy for 702 patrons to forget they had work the next morning as they formed a rather large house and break-dancing circle. That is, if my fuzzy, alcohol-clouded memory serves me right.

Rocking a party is old hat for the Kracker Nuttz, and rocking a party has always been what the Kracker Nuttz are recognized for. While the average Houstonian knows them as popular radio personalities, promoters and club DJs, relatively few know them as the skilled battle DJs and turntablists that they are.
